re-shelled

I decided to test out this inverse ninja law (thanks Jorel) and try out the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled demo today. When I first heard about this game I was instantly thrown back to my childhood, because not only was TMNT one of my favorite TV shows but also my favorite game. The 4-player arcade cabinet was the best digital iteration of the franchise and during my lifetime I believe I've owned almost every TMNT game at some point or an other.

Unfortunately this "re-shelled" version of the game does not live up to the legacy. The graphics are great, the music is passable but overall it's not fun. It doesn't have that nostalgic "feel" of the old games and I attribute this to the transition to the 3D space. I believe they should've just gone with a stylized 2D graphics rather than the 3D, because with 3 dimensions you have to now account for physics in a different way you would in a 2d game. Mentally we switch into cartoon physics mode when looking at something 2D or animated.

After finishing the fight with Baxter Stockman, I just exited and deleted the demo. I just didn't have the will to buy the game and continue. Hopefully they somehow port the original arcade version to the console, then we can truly "dine on turtle soup."
